What drives excavation cost
The biggest cost drivers are site access, soil and rock conditions, the volume of material to move, and how far it has to be hauled. A machine that can back right up to the dig on firm ground works faster than one squeezing onto a tight, sloped or soft lot. Clay, hardpan and buried rock slow digging and can call for a hydraulic hammer, while a high winter water table may need dewatering. Depth, machine size and any end-of-job restoration — re-grading, topsoil and seeding — all feed into the final figure.
Cost by project type
Smaller jobs like a short utility trench or a single-day grading pass sit at the low end, while whole-lot site preparation, a full basement excavation, or clearing a treed acre run higher. Land clearing is usually priced per acre and swings widely with how heavily treed and stumped the ground is. Drainage work depends on trench length, depth and how far the water has to travel to a safe outfall.
